Teen Titans # 58

Description

Miss Martian struggles with her inner conflict while the Clock King and his Terror Titans work over Kid Devil. This is a pretty bleak issue both in writing and art. Miss Martian, M'gann M'orzz, doesn't just debate with her evil counterpart. She ends up offering easy sex in a rest room stall and has hallucinations where she sees her fellow Titans graphically murdered. Meanwhile, Red Devil undergoes brutal torture at the hands of the Terror Titans. There is supposed to be a turning point for Miss Martian as she attends her first days in high school but it is hard to believe that the Titans would allow her to go to such public places unsupervised or unassisted. They could have at least tried to introduce her to high school gradually. Then again, the Titans don't seem to care much for each other. No one seems to notice that Kid Devil is missing and even Robin doesn't do much of anything after learning that Miss Martian is apparently in some sort of quandry. There is a big twist/revelation near the end but any longtime comic-reader will see it coming from a mile away. The art is detailed and flashy but despite all the primary colours, it is also quite grim and rather dark. The characters certainly don't look like teenagers. But then maybe that is a good thing since they don't act like teenagers. The striking thing about this issue is the casual sex and violence in a series that is entitled TEEN Titans. It is not enough to show the Clock King plotting with one of his female accomplices. They have to be shown lying together, nearly naked in bed, apparently after doing 'the deed.' One of the chief attractions of the whole 'Teen Titans' concept was that they were not yet adults and that kids, including pre-teens-- could identify with them. DC Comics appears to have forgotten this and turned this title into another violent team book. It gets two stars out of five.
